Towards a More Moving Image - 2008

In “Towards a More Moving Image,” the filmmaker installs a surveillance camera in a young woman and her father’s apartment. One afternoon, Mary and Tom sit in their living room, chatting about television, German art, and their dinner plans. The filmmaker transcribes their conversation and then films them reading this transcript. Words they spoke extemporaneously take on another dimension. The filmmaker then arranges sentences from the surveillance transcript into a story. This fictional script depicts Tom and Mary as aliens, arguing about whether it is better to learn human behavior from television, in books, or by cooking. In the short fiction film, the words are theirs, but the narrative significance has changed.
